  • Looking for a meaningful cultural exchange experience

  • Curious about culture humility and lived experiences in the Latin America

  • Passionate about soccer/sport

  • Passionate about accelerating gender equity through sport

  • Passionate about coaching/teaching

  • Passionate about education and/or youth development

  • Love to try different foods and explore a new, vibrant city/country

We encourage those ages 18+ to apply. Please note that 16 & 17 year olds may also attend if accompanied by a legal guardian. Not the right fit? Check out our other international opportunities here.

Costs and Expectations

TEAM Camp is organized into two, 1-week sessions. Session One: July 14 - 20 and Session Two: July 21 - 28. You can also apply to come for the entirety of the two weeks which would run from July 14 - 28. While there, you would be supporting all aspects of putting this event on for SWB Nicaragua including the associated costs of the TEAM Camp and supports the start of the new program year at SWB Nicaragua.

Specifically, you would be responsible for:

  1. $700 USD (minimum) financial contribution to Soccer Without Borders, which will include attending/supporting the TEAM Camp, team building activities with the SWB Nicaragua staff, and all local meals while in Granada. (We hope that if you do come for both weeks that your fundraising goal would be a minimum of $1400, instead of $700.)

  2. Airfare to Nicaragua (approx. $500-$800 for flights from the United States)

  3. Following any relevant Visa and entry requirements (more info below)

  4. Medical Expenses including any required and/or recommended immunizations (see below), travel medical insurance (optional)

  5. Accommodation in Granada (approx. $250 per week, per person)

  6. Transportation between Augusto C. Sandino International Airport & Granada (approx. $45/car/trip)

NOTE: SWB has an extensive list of hotels, drivers, and vendors and can answer any questions relating to the above expenses you need help with.

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION ($700 USD)

In order to support a week of activities for SWB players and provide a comprehensive immersion experience, we ask each visitor to contribute $700 (minimum) to SWB Nicaragua. This payment is due upon the acceptance of your application.

In the past, many visitors have exceeded the minimum $700 contribution through fundraising initiatives and events. By engaging your family and friends to fundraise, you can make a huge difference to the program's efforts to provide year-round programming to the Granada community. Should you choose to fundraise, SWB staff will work with you to share best practices and provide you with a personal fundraising page that you can share with friends and family. Some schools also offer small grants for international exchanges either through the NCAA opportunity fund or through the community service office.

*If you are a current NCAA student-athlete, we strongly recommend that you check with your school's compliance officer before beginning any fundraising activities.

FLIGHTS: PURCHASE ON YOUR OWN (COST VARIES)

You are responsible for arranging & purchasing your own flights to and from Augusto C. Sandino International Airport. The cost of your flights is NOT included in your $700 contribution to SWB. Typical round-trip airfare costs to Managua, Nicaragua range between ~$500-$800 USD from the United States and ~$1000-$1700 from Europe.

You are expected to arrive at SWB in Granada by the provided date (usually 2-3 days before the start of the TEAM Camp) unless otherwise discussed. Flight information should be shared with SWB after booking. We recommend booking flights as soon as possible to get the best prices on tickets.

NOTE: Airport transportation to/from Granada to Augusto C. Sandino Airport is approximately $45 USD each way. SWB Nicaragua does NOT have its own van, but has a list of professional drivers it regularly uses that can be arranged for you.

VISA & TOURIST CARD INFORMATION: ($10 USD)

Citizens of the United States (and the countries listed here) do not require a visa while visiting Nicaragua for 90 days or less. You will need to purchase a “tourist card” for $10 USD upon arrival to Nicaragua. Check the US Department of State and the  Nicaraguan immigration website (Spanish only) for the latest visa and entry requirements.

  • All travelers should have an onward or return ticket and evidence of funds to support yourself while in Nicaragua.  You must carry a valid identity document at all times, such as a U.S. driver’s license or U.S. passport.

  • You must purchase a tourist card for $10 USD at the airport (exact change recommended), valid for up to a total of 90 days in any of the member countries of the Central America-4 Border Control Agreement.  Visitors remaining longer must obtain an extension from Nicaraguan immigration or be subject to large fines.

  • Individuals traveling from countries at risk of yellow fever transmission must show proof of yellow fever vaccination administered at least 10 days before travel to be permitted entry to Nicaragua.

  • If you use a passport of a different nationality than you did on prior trips to Nicaragua, Nicaraguan authorities may deny you entry.  If you possess multiple nationalities, you should carry a valid passport.

IMMUNIZATIONS, MEDICAL, & TRAVEL HEALTH INSURANCE: (COST VARIES)

It is your responsibility to obtain any required vaccinations to travel to Nicaragua. Check the CDC website for required and recommended vaccines and medicines and visit your doctor at least a month before your trip to get vaccines or medicines you may need.

If your personal medical insurance does not cover international travel, you can consider short-term travel medical insurance for your trip. Past visitors have frequently used Patriot Travel but there are many other available options.

Any minor medical incidents that occur in Nicaragua, such as a stomach bug, the flu, malaria, typhoid etc can be treated at hospitals/clinics at relatively low costs (i.e. treating a mild case of malaria may cost around $15-100 depending on severity). Travel insurance will generally not cover these costs, but would be used in case of a major medical emergency or accident.

Waivers

All visitors must sign a waiver indicating that they understand the risks associated with international work and will not hold Soccer Without Borders accountable for any injuries, accidents or loss of property that occurs while working internationally. Waivers are due to SWB by upon your acceptance to the trip.
