Soccer Without Borders is excited to welcome University of California, Berkeley, alumnus and former Major League Soccer player Calen Carr to our advisory board! We’re all looking forward to working with Calen as an advisor and thrilled to add someone with so much experience and passion for soccer to the SWB team. A Berkeley native, Calen was both an opponent and teammate to Oakland Program Director Ben Gucciardi during their high school years. After continuing his playing career at the University of California, Berkeley, he was drafted by the Chicago Fire of the MLS—taking his talents to the professional game. A Media Studies major at UC Berkeley, Calen is now back home in the Bay Area after finishing his career with the Houston Dynamo, and working as an on air-host for MLSsoccer.com, and a writer for Howler magazine. He also helped launch a soccer-inspired clothing line, Future Collective. We couldn’t be happier to have him join our team.
The SWB boys’ teams at Oakland International High School were fortunate enough to have Calen as a guest at practice this past week and it’s safe to say they share our enthusiasm in having another soccer-lover as a part of SWB! Calen shared his story with us—from the Bay to Chicago to Houston and back again—and the boys took it all in, asked tons of questions, and of course, asked for some pictures. Thanks, Calen, for coming out, and welcome to the SWB family!
